On the night of 27th June 1945, some Japanese Prisoners of War (POW's) planned a breakout from Camp 7, north of West Hay. Because of the line of fire from Light Machine Gun (LMG) posts at various points, west Hay and Mungadal were evacuated and the town put on full alert.
Most of the Japanese POW's had been transferred to Hay following the Cowra breakout of Saturday 5th August 1944.
Italian Captain Edgardo Simone (the fox or le volpe) was sent to Hay Camp because of two previous escapes. He escaped again from Hay.
On Sat 24 June at the Museum, learn more about the Hay threatened Japanese breakout and 1 successful and 3 foiled Italian escapes. Drinks and nibbles served from 5-6pm.
