Waste & Recycling

Hay Shire Council is committed to reducing and recycling waste within the Shire and is investigating how it can improve and increase its participation in recycling and diversion of waste products within current budget constraints. At present those opportunities are somewhat limited.

Council encourages all residents to consider how to minimise waste and reduce the impact on the environment and maintains the philosophy for minimising waste as

  • Reduce
  • Re-use
  • Recycle

Here are a few tips to minimise waste:

Reduce

  • Be selective about accepting packaging or plastic bags – provide your own string or shopping bag
  • Buy sufficient but not surplus
  • Are there cheaper tried and tested alternatives that can be used?

Re-Use

  • Save money and consider items that may be re-used.
  • Home composting is an effective recycling and re-use of material that can improve your gardens and environment.
  • Worm farms are a highly productive way of improving the environment and reducing waste. The worm casings and worm liquid are excellent fertilisers.

Recycle

  • Use the facilities that are there.
  • Make the effort to recycle – it isn’t someone else’s problem – it’s your commitment to the environment.
