Aussie Backyard Bird Count

Hay Shire Council is making every bird count: Join the Aussie Backyard Bird Count from 22-28 October

  • #AussieBirdCount returns from 22-28 October during National Bird Week
  • Hay Shire Council is proud to support Birdlife Australia’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count and help count 2 million birds in seven days

Hay Shire Council and BirdLife Australia are calling on local residents to spend 20 minutes in their backyards or local outdoor spaces this October and count the birds they see for the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, during National Bird Week from 22-28 October.

Using the specially designed app, which helps people identify local birds based on size, colour and location, the aim is to count more than 2 million birds in seven days.

The count follows a record-smashing Aussie Backyard Bird Count in 2017 with more than 72,000 nature-loving Australians taking time out from their busy schedules to count more than 1.9 million birds.

You can register your interest by heading to the official website at www.aussiebirdcount.org.au.

Once they’ve counted, locals will be able to see the number of birds and species being counted nearby, with real-time updates on the Aussie Backyard Bird Count app and website.

“We are pleased to be partnering with Hay Shire Council for our fifth Aussie Backyard Bird Count and appreciate the involvement from local bird lovers in assisting us to learn more about local bird populations across Australia,” Paul Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer of BirdLife Australia said.

In 2017, Australian birdwatchers recorded more than 578 species, with the Rainbow Lorikeet, Noisy Miner and Australian Magpie remaining Australia’s most counted birds.

To take part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, all you need is 20 minutes, the Aussie Bird Count app or the website aussiebirdcount.org.au. You can submit as many counts as you like and there are prizes to be won!

You can also visit the Hay Shire Council Office (134 Lachlan Street, Hay), Library (204-216 Lachlan Street, Hay) or the Visitor Information Centre (407 Moppett Street, Hay) to pick up more information and some merchandise.

Happy counting!
