Blue Green Algae update 16 March 2018


 The latest blue-green algal results for the Murrumbidgee River at Maude Weir Buoy as well as the Hay Weir Pool sites that include Hay Weir Boy and Leonard Street Sites, indicate that the blue-green algal cell numbers are lower than the red alert range. According to blue-green algal management protocol however, the sites remain on Red alert until two consecutive laboratory results indicate that the algal levels have reduced to lower than red alert level. New water samples were taken for analysis at these sites this week. Results for these samples are expected to be available by Monday.

Amber alerts are current for Burrinjuck Dam at Goodhope, Murrumbidgee River at Carathool and Redbank Weir Buoy Sites.

The results further indicate that Burrinjuck Dam at Woolgarlo, Blowering Station 1 (Dam Wall) and Tombullen Outlet at Weir D/S are on Green alert.

Samples from other sites have no alert.

It is also important to note that Lake Albert in Wagga Wagga is still in a state of Red alert

WaterNSW blue-green algae red alert to Hay Weir Pool (26/02/2018)

WaterNSW has extended its red level (high alert) warning for blue-green algae to take in all of the Hay Weir Pool.


Hay Shire Council has erected warning signs around the weir pool and water samples will be analysed to determine the full extent of the algal outbreak.


A red alert level warning indicates that people should not undertake recreational activities where they may come into direct contact with the water, such as swimming, as well as domestic uses including showering and washing.


Contact with the water may also pose a threat to livestock and pets. Warning signs will remain in place while high levels of blue-green algae are present.


Blue-green algae are potentially toxic and may cause gastroenteritis in humans if consumed and skin and eye irritation after contact. Boiling the water does not remove algal toxins.


People are advised not to enter the water, not to drink untreated water or bathe in water drawn from the dam while this red alert level warning is in place. Town water supplies are being treated by council and remain unaffected and safe to drink.


Livestock owners are reminded to continue to check stock water supplies for blue-green algae and to remove stock from foreshores where surface scum is visible or blue-green algae are suspected.


Blue-green algae usually appear as green paint-like scum on the water, near the edges, or as greenish clumps throughout the water. It makes the water appear dirty, green or discoloured and generally has a strong musty or earthy odour.


People should not eat mussels or crayfish from red level warning areas. Any fish caught should be cleaned and washed thoroughly in uncontaminated water and any internal organs disposed of before consumption.


Blue-green algae occur naturally and can reproduce quickly in favourable conditions where there is still or slow-flowing water, abundant sunlight and sufficient levels of nutrients.


It is not possible to predict how long the algae will remain at high levels. Regular monitoring will continue and the alert will be lifted as soon as the high levels of algae dissipate. People who believe they may have been affected by blue-green algae are advised to seek medical advice.
