Tour of the Lower Lachlan Valley Area

On Tuesday 16th January both Hay Shire’s Federal MP Sussan Ley, and State MP Austin Evans were in the Shire for a visit to look at water issues in the Lachlan Valley. The visit was organised by local farmer Gordon Turner, and included Hilton Taylor, the Assistant Secretary of the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office, and Mary Ewing and Tom Green from Lachlan Valley Water Users Association, and Amanda Spalding, General Manager of Hay Shire.

The group visited various properties including Gordon and Bronwyn Turner’s property in the Booligal area that has creeks that are part of the Lachlan wetlands; a weir on the Lower Lachlan near to Oxley, and John and Alison Crossley’s property ‘Riverside’.

A lunchtime meeting was held at the Booligal hotel, with Sussan Ley MP, Austin Evans MP, Mayor Bill and Jenny Sheaffe, Gordon and Bronwyn Turner, Jim, Allison and Edward Crossley, Greg, Helen and Katie Rogers, Amanda Spalding, Hilton Taylor, Mary Ewing, Tom Green.

Hilton Taylor commented that he found it very helpful to see on the ground issues that he is aware of and to hear from local property owners and representatives of Lachlan Valley Water.

Amanda Spalding said ‘It was great to see both of our MPs visiting Hay Shire together with the Assistant Secretary of the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office to discuss issues of such importance to us. I am grateful to Gordon Turner for organising the visit, and to Sussan Ley and Austin Evans for coming on a day long fact finding mission. It was also good to meet Mary Ewing and Tom Green from Lachlan Valley Water who shared their expertise. As someone new to Hay Shire it has been a very useful trip for me to see water issues on the ground, and to listen to the experts discussing what works and what could be achieved with all.
